Today I asked my doctor…

Today I went for a follow up visit with my primary physician, basically to monitor how I have been managing my diabetes. Being fully aware of my more serious diagnosis, he commented how well I looked. We continued to chit chat while he examined me, when I asked him if it was normal for someone with my diagnosis to be walking around for four months since the identification of my condition with no symptoms whatsoever and to have gone through chemo and radiation therapies with minimal or no side effects, he categorically answered, “No, it is not normal; you are a special case, he added.

I have been pondering his answer since I left his office a few hours ago. The words. “you are special” are in my mind like an endless merry go round . Those words have a tendency to feed the ego. I have been told that many times when people have praised my God-given talents of music, writing, etc. But the words of the doctor today are not for my ego; they are for my own recognition of the I AM within me.

“ Charles Fillmore, the co- founder of Unity wrote: “The Spirit of God, speaking through Ezekiel, commands, “Cast away from you all your transgressions, wherein ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit.” This command is to the conscious man, or mind. But later the Spirit of God says, “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you,” thus signifying that the whole mind must be embraced in the regeneration. There must be perfect co-operation of the three phases of mind in order to produce the perfect man. “I, Jehovah, search the mind, I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.” “Purify your hearts, ye double-minded,” says James. We purify our heart when we turn conscious attention within and the pure ideas of the super conscious mind come forth to meet our call. “He that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.” When we seek the super consciousness and make conscious connection with it we harmonize all the forces of mind and body; we lift up the subconscious until a complete, conscious unification of the three phases of mind is affected and we become established “in singleness of . . . heart.” We can say with the Psalmist, “His heart is fixed, trusting in Jehovah.” We fear nothing, for we know that we draw on the divine ideas in God-Mind and that they all are good.”

So, what does all that have to do with being a “special case” or an anomaly, like another health care professional recently classified me? I will try to explain it the best I can.

There is blind faith and there is understanding faith. One is not necessarily better or more powerful than the other. However, blind faith is an instinctive trust in a power higher than ourselves. And, again, there’s nothing wrong with that. Understanding faith, while incorporating belief and trust is also based on immutable principle. (Paraphrased from Lessons in Truths by Emilie Cady)

Faith does not depend on physical facts, or on the evidence of the senses, because it is born of intuition, or the Spirit of truth ever living at the center of our being. Its action is infinitely higher than that of intellectual conclusions; it is founded on Truth. (Emilie Cady, Lessons in Truth)

Understanding faith has been also called, scientific faith. Remember when they first taught us the scientific method, which basically said that if we followed some specific steps, the results could be repeatable by following those same steps again?

Well, I have embraced that same approach to faith. In forty plus years of applying these principles, I have found that if I embrace the power of the Divine with all my mind, with all my soul and with all my heart, I can bring into visible manifestation that invisible which I have contemplated using my God-given faculties of Faith, Imagination, Will, Love, etc. It has worked in the past and it is working now. Our Way Shower, Jesus followed all his healings with “Your faith has made you whole” or “Let it be done according to your faith”. I believe that the call to purify our hearts by the apostle James, who called his contemporaries, “double minded” is a call to make up our minds about whom do we serve and what do we believe.

We basically have two options. When we receive challenging news from the doctors or from any other source, we can go to a place of fear or we can go to a place of love and trusting the Divine within us with all our minds, all our souls, and all our hearts. Does that mean that I am to cast away medical treatment and advise? Absolutely not. I don’t have in me the “same mind that was in Christ Jesus” For now I just know that Spirit is working through me and the medical professionals to bring about the best result. I let the doctors do their work and at the same time allow God to work through me.

Yes, today I asked the doctor, but the real answer came from the Great Physician who said: You are my beloved in whom I am well pleased. Do not be afraid; I will never leave you, I will never forsake you; after all, you are my image and likeness.

Until next time
